5 beauty boosters to make mom feel human again

I’m currently on maternity leave with my newborn and 2-year-old so I’m fine-tuning my time management skills between naps, poops and feedings. You know the drill. And while motherhood is the most important job in the world, where does that leave time for me?

I find myself in loungewear on the daily (i.e., yoga pants and a snarky tee), with a mom bun (messy hair, don’t care) and perhaps a few smears of spit up to coordinate with my handbag.

Let’s face it, motherhood is hard and it is easy to forget yourself when you have little ones asking for this and that every five seconds or while you’re nursing for hours on end. However, what I do know is, if Mom is not happy, no one is happy. You must find time for yourself. It’s a non-negotiable in my book.

If that means getting a bi-weekly manicure–do it. Or, maybe grabbing a nutritious smoothie that’s actually good for you. Go ahead, baby, indulge. It’s hard to feel beautiful when you’re a mom, but even small things can add up and make you feel your best. As my hubby would say, “Treat yo’ self.”

Beauty can be found in places you may not even realize. Here are five places that may make you feel more beautiful (and human) again after baby.

JOOJ Blow Dry

A good hair day can totally turn around your mood, am I right?. Let JOOJ Blow Dry take your limp locks to the next level. Each service includes a shampoo, condition, scalp massage, and, of course, a blow dry. The full JOOJ experience starts at $48, no matter what length or hair type you have. If you can’t make it to the Renaissance Hotel in Northbrook for your appointment, JOOJ recently launched its mobile Airstream with full amenities that comes to you!

The 60’s Beauty Lash

Who has time for a lengthy beauty routine? I certainly don’t! I’m lucky if I can slap on some concealer, mascara and lip gloss. Transform your low maintenance look and cut out significant time from your daily routine. The 60’s Beauty Lash service menu includes eyelash extensions, lash lifts and brow services. Choose between the Grace Kelly (classic and refined), the Natalie Wood (understated and subtle) or, my personal fave, the Sophia Loren (full and dark). If you’ve got time to spare while your little one snoozes, head to Winnetka for a classic full set, which will run you $150.

Twisted Tree Yoga

Looking to calm your mind and body? Branch out to Des Plaines and head to Twisted Tree Yoga. Pop in for Baby Yoga/Massage (6 weeks to nearly crawling) or Little Tree Yoga (4 months to 2 years old). This is a supportive environment where you won’t be judged if your little one is fussing. Reinvigorate your practice, start a new journey into yoga or just have some adult conversation.

Check out their schedule online for when classes are offered. Pricing rates range from $12-17 (pay what you can within that range).

Green Nails Spa

With the green movement among us, we strive to have green homes, green products and toys for our kids, and green food for our tummies, but why stop there? Even nail spas are going green!

Green Nails& Spa, located in Park Ridge, is a premier salon focusing on and specializing in natural nail and spa services for all women, men and children. The luxurious and relaxing salon is custom built with a green concept in mind. From the moment you walk into this space, a feeling of calm and serenity sweeps over you, from the clean feel and contemporary look, to the music that lulls you (and hopefully your baby) into a trance.

Their copper soaking bowls help keep fungus away without using jets that can hold onto bacteria. Choose from three all-natural options for your pedicure foot soak – lemon, baking soda or green tea. The pampering doesn’t stop there – complimentary to every pedicure is a hot stone leg and foot massage. This place takes nail spas to the next level! They even stock organic polish brands, such as Zoya.

A no-chip mani and pedi will run you a cool $65.

Mingle Juice Bar

Sometimes moms get a chance to eat. Sometimes.

If you need to sustain on something other than coffee and dreams, head over to Mingle in The Glen, in Glenview, for a juice or smoothie bowl to fill your tummy. They are currently reworking their menu for spring, but my current favorites are the Jugo 15 bowl and Grapefruit Mint juice. There is something so very beautiful and zen about this place that sets the mood for a mommy. So, sit back, sip on your delish juice and snuggle your new baby in a relaxing environment.
