"Everyday Edisons" - the public television show that has brought such products from idea to market as the Gyro Bowl, the Emery Cat Board and the Mister Steamy Dryer Ball - is auditioning for kid and adult inventors for Season 5.
In addition, the show's parent company, Edison Nation, is partnering with the Boy Scouts of America to give kid inventors the opportunity to fine tune their ideas and possibly take them to market.
The show auditions are in three different categories:
- General - deadline April 30
- Kitchen, home and bath - deadline April 23
- Pet innovations - deadline April 23
"If selected, that person will be on Season 5 of the show and we develop their idea from product design to engineering to market," said Edison Nation public relations manager Mary Dickson. "The overall mission of the show is to document for viewers how the product development process works."
The show has had its share of parents and kids. In Season 2, high schoolers Cody and Mark Fox invented a plastic-infused textbook cover that will save students lots of money in damaged book fees.
In Season 1, Brad and Melinda Shepard invented the Gyro Bowl - the kids' bowl that doesn't spill. It's one of "Everyday Edison's" million selling success stories.
To enter, all you have to do is join Edison Nation, fill out a submission form, and upload any supporting media about your idea. The idea will go through an 8-stage review. After that, says Dickson,
"We'll narrow it down to up to 50 finalists and they will actually pitch in person to our judges" in Charlotte, North Carolina in September. Ten finalists will then get to appear on the show, which airs on WTTW in Chicago.
The partnership with the Boy Scouts, officially called the $1 Million Innovation Challenge, is open to kids 7 to 21, but it is not part of the TV show. Kids are invited to submit their product ideas at www.edisonnation.com/boyscouts. Edison Nation will select a winner or winners and commit $1 million to the development of those ideas.
