Kids get a welcome goody bag and a kid-size animal print robe to use during their stay. The indoor rooftop swimming pool is a kid-favorite. The Kimpton Kids package includes accommodations in a queen/queen room, continental breakfast for four at adjacent restaurant Sable, kiddie cocktails during evening reception and a bedtime snack of milk and cookies.

Hilton Chicago/Indian Lakes Resort

Situated on 260 rolling acres in DuPage County, the Hilton Chicago/Indian Lakes Resort offers an alternative to the usual Chicago area resorts. Tee off on Blackhawk Trace, the 27-hole championship golf course, visit the driving range, or arrange a family putt putt tournament. The kids will enjoy the heated indoor or outdoor pool. Pitch horseshoes, play volleyball and shoot pool. There's a full-service spa onsite.

The James Hotel

This hip boutique hotel at the corner of Rush and Ontario passed the test with our staff reviewer and her family. Kid friendly, but not necessarily kid-proof, the hotel provides free car service with car seats and boosters. Kids especially loved the suite's screening room filled entirely with a giant bed and cushions, where they could watch movies projected onto an entire wall in Bose surround sound. Family fare abounds, including brunch options filled with kid-friendly breakfast foods. The Family Adventurer with Paul Frank package (starting at $399) includes two city passes to five Chicago attractions, milk and cookie turndown, a child-size pair of Paul Frank pajamas and in-room breakfast for two.

Residence Inn Chicago Downtown

This all-suite hotel is located in the city's Gold Coast district. Each suite includes a full-equipped kitchen. A complimentary breakfast buffet is served daily and a dinner buffet is served Wednesday evenings.

The Ritz-Carlton Chicago

Before your stay, provide the hotel with kids' names and get a welcome toy wagon, homemade cookies and juice, and child-size bathrobes. The Candyman can bring the candy cart right to your room to mix and match candies. Kids 5-12 can join the pastry team in the kitchen and take an behind-the-scenes tour of the kitchen, followed by a cookie-making session.

Swissotel

Families can choose to stay in one of Swissôtel's Kid-Friendly Suites. These themed suites include a separate but adjoining room for kids filled with DVD's, video games, toys and books to keep the young ones occupied until it's time to snuggle them in to their special child-sized beds. The Kid-Friendly Suites come with four tickets to one of three area attractions including Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium and Field Museum.  Children also eat free at Geneva Restaurant, located inside Swissôtel Chicago and receive complimentary access to the 42nd floor pool.

Talbott Hotel

Trump International Hotel and Tower Chicago

Family friendly might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think Trump Hotels, but our staff reviewer took her three little boys for a weekend and found everything they encountered geared to their family. From cookies in the room with each child's name on them to individual backpacks with things for the kids to do, the entire staff bent over backwards to make the family comfortable. The Trump Kids program offers special spa treatments, swim classes, and interactive video games.

Westin Michigan Avenue

Offers an American Girl Package with a free American doll bed that can be taken home, American Girl in-room movie and an ice cream sundae for girls and their doll. The Lego package includes a small cup to be taken to the downtown LEGO store and filled with LEGO elements from the Pick-A-Brick wall, mini-figure playing cards, one ice cream sundae and a free children's in-room movie.
