Fashion trends for Chicago moms this holiday season

The countdown to holiday parties and festive family gatherings is on. But instead of pulling out that trusty LBD and same ol' statement necklace, consider giving some of this year's trendiest pieces a try. Here are a few I think are just right for busy, style-starved moms.

Don't let leather scare you. It can be tamed and toned down for those of us without Harleys. A tailored leather dress is a tasteful, age appropriate way to rock one of this year's hottest fabrics.

This one is "vegan," which is a fancy word for fake. But you'd never know it. It's the perfect cut and style for busy kid-chasing moms and it's half the price you'd pay for the real deal.

Or, if you want to try leather pants, Kirna Zabete pants are $29.99 at Target. They have just the right amount of rocker chic mixed with functionality. Pair with a sleeveless silk blouse and tailored jacket or a long fitted cardigan, and wedge booties or black patent pumps for a sophisticated approach. I love the stretch material along the sides and the easy pull-on style.

Gold digger

It's all about the Midas touch this season, and a simple way to add instant "boom!" to any holiday dress is by going for the gold. Layer several delicate necklaces (three is the perfect number) or go with a thick and twisted bracelet/necklace combo. Here a few of my faves.

The whole line of gold accessories by Jillery makes my heart skip a beat. Wire-wrapped ball bracelet by Jillery, $74

Don't underestimate your daughter's favorite store for quick and cheap chic. And it's OK if you wear it for one season! Check out the golden baubles you can snag at Forever 21 for under $15. I like the dimpled and etched gold necklace, $12.80. Gold leaf necklace, $4.80. Curved Metal Cuff, $3.80

Animal print

There's something innately sexy and chic about animal prints. But they're easy to wear all wrong. If you want to get it right, consider these beautiful pieces by Ann Taylor in this season's "it" cat hide: the white leopard. Me-OW. White leopard ponte dress, $138. White leopard denims, $88.

A red lip

If there's ever a time to try a sexy red lip color, it's during the holidays. But picking the perfect hue can take a bit of know how. Jodi Risley, MAKE UP FOR EVER Education and Artistry Executive, shares her expert advice.

For a warm skin tone, choose a red lipstick that consists of orange-red or brown-red. A few common warm shades are red brick and fire engine red. For cool-toned women, blue-reds or berry-reds complement the complexion best. Choose shades such as raspberry red or bordeaux red.

Gina Brooke, Madonna's makeup artist, teamed up with MAKE UP FOR EVER to create a custom shade of Aqua Rouge for Madonna to be used during her MDNA tour. The result was Aqua Rouge #8-a universally flattering true classic red shade that's so highly pigmented that it doesn't show undertones and looks great on 99 percent of complexions. MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Rouge #8, $24, Sephora
