5 Mother's Day brunches in Chicago

Brunch is the classic way to spend the perfect Mother's Day morning, but with so many gorgeous brunch buffet spreads in Chicago, it's hard to choose the one that the woman in your life will love. We tried all the fancy downtown Sunday brunch buffets (yes, our life is so stressful) so you can pinpoint the perfect Mother's Day treat.

Allium Restaurant at The Four Seasons

Price: Normally $58 adults, with a separate a la carte kids menu. Price for Mother's Day $130 adults, $55 kids. Three seatings: 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Mother will love it: The Seasons Restaurant has transformed into Allium, under the direction of Chef Kevin Hickey. The fare is a twist on American cuisine rooted in regional, farm-to-table fare.

Atmosphere: A large, airy room overlooking the Gold Coast shops, massive chandeliers and live music make this the perfect place for a celebration.

Kid-friendly assessment: Kids are offered a coloring book and crayons. A kids' buffet is available, which includes PB&J sandwiches, chicken fingers, tater tots and a few special dessert treats.

Value: The carving and entrée station that features leg of spring lamb, prime rib, Maine lobster with blue crab, and shrimp shepherd's pie

Mother's Day highlights: A massive assortment of desserts, such as pistachio nougat cake, warm banana crisp, mini lava cakes and chocolate cherry cake wraps, will be offered.

Price: Normally $70 adults, $25 kids 8 and under. Price for Mother's Day $125 adults, $35 kids under 8.

Mother will love it: Upscale, luxurious food just like Trump would eat: dine on fancy cheeses, prime rib with horseradish, made-to-order omelets, sushi and fresh-squeezed orange juice.

Atmosphere: Similar to a five-star European restaurant. Very sleek, modern and calming.

Kid-friendly assessment: Within five minutes of our arrival, everyone knew our 2-year-old's name, and they presented her with a coloring book, crayons and a stuffed Trump Kids dog. There was a kids' buffet table offering mini-burgers, mini-pizzas and chicken fingers.

We were disappointed: The pancakes and waffles were sitting under a warming lamp, so they didn't taste fresh.

Value: Brunch comes with a mimosa or sparkling wine. Feast on the prosciutto and other meats and cheeses to get your money's worth.

Mother's Day highlights: Ham and prime rib carving, Ahi tuna salad nicoise. Every mom will also receive a complimentary make-up application by Chanel Beaute and will walk away with a flower bouquet.

The Peninsula Chicago

Price: Normally $75 adults, $20 children 12 and under. Price for Mother's Day $135 adults, $42 children 12 and under.

Mother will love it: Quality and array of foods were incredible. Everything from sashimi to Peking duck to roasted pork to truffled eggs Benedict was served. The dessert table even included a "candy bar," where you could grab chocolate-covered caramels, truffles and handmade marshmallows.

Atmosphere: Live music floated through the airy lobby, where brunch was held. It was a sunny, luxurious place to be.

Kid-friendly assessment: The kids' buffet table was adorable - and at kid's height - and offered everything a child could ever want to eat. Kids can also head to the Children's Lounge, which features games and activities, including a magician.

We were disappointed: We had to ask for our coffee to be refilled, our old plates to be taken away and our cutlery to be changed. We also had to flag down the host to get our waiter's attention.

Value: Alcohol is not included, but the quality of the raw oysters, sashimi and fresh-cut meats was very high.

Mother's Day highlights: Look forward to a buffet that's about seven times as large as the typical Sunday brunch, including a massive Asian station catered by Shanghai Terrace.

Pucks' at the Museum of Contemporary Art

Price: Normally $28 for adults, $15 for kids 12 and under. Price for Mother's Day $28 adults, $15 kids 12 and under.

Mother will love it: Modest buffet offerings at a very modest price. While there was significantly less food here than all the other buffets, it was about a quarter of the price. Get all your standard brunch fare, including made-to-order omelets and waffles, plus a carving station, dessert area and a few salad choices.

Atmosphere: It's situated in the modern dining area of the restaurant, and it's very quiet and calm.

Kid-friendly assessment: Since it was so quiet, it's not the right place for kids if they aren't going to behave. The restaurant provided a high chair, but no kids' buffet (although scrambled eggs and pancakes from the buffet are always a great kid-friendly option) or coloring book.

We were disappointed: There wasn't much beyond what food you'd expect at a typical buffet.

Value: For the relatively low price, they offer a very nice brunch. Alcohol is extra.

Mother's Day highlights: Expect the same brunch as a typical Sunday, but the pastry chef will be adding some special desserts in honor of mom.

deca at The Ritz

Price: Normally a la carte menu. Price for Mother's Day Brunch $129 adults, $40 kids 6-12. Children under 5 eat free.

Mother will love it: They really focus on quality over quantity here. While there are relatively fewer selections here compared with the Four Seasons and Peninsula, you can still get sushi made-to-order, raw oysters, carved meats, octopus salad and breakfast items.

Atmosphere: The lobby atmosphere would have been more festive with live music, but the buffet surrounding the fountain made for a very unique and fresh feeling.

Kid-friendly assessment: There will be a kids playroom with crafts and sitters.

Value: The price includes your choice of one glass of champagne, mimosa or a bloody mary. You may get more food at some of the other places, but the meal we got was delicious.

Mother's Day highlights: A more elaborate brunch featuring a special carving station, pates and a seafood tower. There will be four seatings: 10:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 1:30 p.m.
