Summer is prime skunk season, so you’ll want to remember this great pet de-skunking tip from Francine Barnes, owner of Carriage Hill Kennels in Glenview.

Do not try to rinse the smell off with water, it only increases the stink. Instead, in a bucket mix: 1 quart of fresh hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda and 2 tablespoons liquid soap (such as Dawn detergent). The mixture will bubble. Pour it over your pet—outside so your house won’t smell—and let sit for 10 minutes. Rinse and repeat. If the stink persists, make more and follow up with a trip to a professional groomer.

Note: Do not premix the solution or store this potion in a bottle.
