For some families, being able to afford an overnight summer camp is nearly impossible. But a new organization is helping make this dream come true for many local kids.

Summer Camp Opportunities Provide an Edge (SCOPE), helps economically disadvantaged kids attend not-for-profit camps through "camperships." Last year the program sent 100 kids to camp—this year the goal is 300, says Dana Cohn, associate director at Lake of the Woods and Greenwoods camps.

To raise money for this summer’s program, SCOPE is holding a fundraiser at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers in downtown Chicago at 7 p.m. April 24. For more information, visit www.scope-midwest.org.

Families interested in applying for a campership can visit the Web site or e-mail info@scope-midwest.org.
