As an art therapist and child trauma specialist in the Englewood area, Mary Usdrowski has seen the effects of violence on children in Chicago firsthand. To create something positive from the struggles of Chicago families, Usdrowski has started a Children’s Peace Statue Project in unity with International Peace Day, Sept. 21.

Usdrowski hopes to raise money for a peace statue in Englewood that would be dedicated to Chicago children lost to violence. There will be a contest for the design of the statue and Usdrowski is calling on the community to help raise money for it.

"I have started a nonviolence movement beginning in the local schools that I work with," Usdrowski explains. "It entails spreading the word about the Children’s Peace Statue Project and giving people the opportunity, if they support a violence-free zone, to place a designed flyer in their windows at home or work, to actively show their participation in helping their community to become violence-free."
