Take a mini-trip in the city

If you're looking for some family entertainment on a budget, check out the city of Chicago’s new Urban Adventure program, which guides visitors through seven themed trips in the city. From visiting the lakeshore to touring some of Chicago’s ethnic neighborhoods, the Urban Rangers can get you started on a free trek through the road less traveled.

The adventures begin at the Chicago Cultural Center Visitor Information Center, 77 E. Randolph St. Start by meeting with an Urban Ranger representative to develop the day’s itinerary. Mini-adventures are particularly family friendly, says Dorothy Coyle, director of the Office of Tourism. Estimated to last about 30 minutes, these walking mini-tours include participation pins and questionnaires to guide your trip.

A guidebook to all seven themed trips as well as the mini-adventures is available free at the Cultural Center and includes icons for locations on the tours that are considered family friendly.
