BY THE NUMBERS There is no job easier than teaching if you don’t care—and no job harder if you do." A teacher, LeMay Smith, the writer’s mother, once said that. And there is no way we can do enough for the many teachers who care.
An apple for the teacher is a start. Maybe even a Golden Apple:
1 Date in December—Dec. 1—that is the deadline for nominating any "great teacher" you know in preschool through third grade in Cook, Lake or DuPage counties for the 2006 Golden Apple Awards.
1 Number of Web sites where you can find the Golden Apple nominating forms: www.goldenapple.org.
3 Number of years in a cycle of awards, with awards for ninth through 12th grades next year and fourth through eighth grades the following year.
19 Number of years Golden Apples have been awarded.
1,000 Number of nominations received each year.
10 Number of teachers chosen for a Golden Apple each year.
2,500 Number of dollars received by each winner.
1 Number of laptop computers received by each winner.
0 Number of dollars paid by each winner for a fall sabbatical of courses at Northwestern University.
4,500,000 Number of teachers in the United States for preschool through 12th grade.
27,000,000,000 Number of apples grown in the United States each year. So there are still plenty of other apples to go around.
