I repair pieces of history," says doctor Angel Overcash, owner of Angelic Creations, a doll hospital and retail store in Naperville.
Most children have a doll or stuffed animal they love so much that an arm falls off, an eye rolls out or the head pops off. Many of these injured loved ones are relegated to the basement or a dark corner of the closet, awaiting a repair that may never come. But Overcash can mend the damaged doll, and the child's broken heart.
"We do take emergencies," says Overcash. While routine doll repairs can take up to five months, the three-member staff will try to fix dolls within an hour if a child is particularly attached. Depending on the work involved, a hospital visit can cost as little as $5 or as much as $600, Overcash says.
Sharing Overcash's passion for dolls are two staff members who moonlight as hospital assistants on the weekends. Kim Anne Foraker-Koons, a marriage and family counselor, is the resident stuffed animal veterinarian and surgeon, while Ruth Nast, a registered nurse, is the doll triage nurse.
Children are the main focus at Angelic Creations. In addition to the emergency repair service, kids can find baby dolls, collector dolls, horses and wooden toys to purchase. Or they can book a dollmaking party or attend a doll ceramics class.
Sherri Shackel-Dorren of Wheaton and her 5-year-old daughter, Madeleine, were shopping for a special doll for her 2-year-old daughter, but could not find a store that sold anything unique.
"I'd been looking all around the area and couldn't find nice dolls anywhere," says Shackel-Dorren, "until someone suggested I try Angelic Creations."
With Master of Dollmaking and Doctor of Dollmaking degrees from Seeley's Doll Artisan Guild School of Dollmaking in New York City, Overcash has been healing dolls in Naperville for 23 years.
"We play dolls all day," smiles Overcash. "We love it."
On Nov. 6, kids can take a $45 class and create a doll as part of a national Make Your Own Baby Event competition. Winner of the Naperville event, sponsored by Adora, a doll company, will be entered into a national contest for a chance to win a trip for two to Florida for the International Doll Expo.
