Suitcase Packin’ Mama

Traveling with tots

I have to admit that when my kids were really small, we rarely traveled with them. With two sets of adoring grandparents chomping for time with the grandbabies, it was easy for my husband and me to drop them off and head off for an overnight or even an entire weekend alone. We never went for more than two days, though. It was too hard on us to be away from them for that long and the grandparents started to wilt by the end of Day Two.

I like to think I opted for separate vacations so they could spend some quality time with the grandparents and I could spend some quality time with my husband. But perhaps it just felt too much like work to take the kids along.

I remember hearing from a friend who did take his newborn son along on an island vacation. His wife had packed boxes of baby supplies, including a case of disposable diapers. "What," said the husband in utter frustration, "doesn't she think babies in the islands wear diapers?"

For that reason, I thought it sounded like a great idea when I heard about a new Web site called HAVE BABY WILL TRAVEL.It was launched by a Canadian mom who wanted to find everything she needed to know about taking the kids on holiday in one place. It's a nice idea, but so far the execution isn't great. It lists 19 detinations, ranging from Florida to Turkey. The tips section doesn't offer any brilliant ideas your basic efficient mom doesn't already know, although it seems to have plenty of ads. And, unless you're planning on taking the tyke to the Outback, I think her must-have packing list is rather over the top. (It seems she made up the ist after traveling to Cuba where it's tough to buy anything. So I suppose it is a handy reference for everything you would want to pack if you were headed to some real out of the way place--somewhere you can't buy what you might need.)

Just wanted to pass along the info, in case you want to check it out. Then let me know what you think should be inlcuded in a great one-stop Web site for busy parents who want to vacation with their tiny ones.
