Meet Cathy Cassani Adams

About this blog

Cathy Cassani Adams is searching for greater meaning and higher purpose. Her search has taken her down different paths, from the aisles of the self-help section, to the workshops of gurus, to her past experience as a child and family therapist at Children's Memorial Hospital, to her current work as a certified Parent Coach and yoga instructor.  But her greatest lessons come from her three beautiful daughters, ages 8, 6, and 3.  Cathy is the author of "The Self-Aware Parent: 19 Lessons for Growing with Your Children.", she's an instructor in the Sociology Department at Dominican University, and she and her husband Todd host Zen Parenting Radio on Pagatim.fm.  Cathy lives with her family in Elmhurst and she can be found at www.cathycassaniadams.com.

Let's be clear - what do we really want for our children?

I think we have confused happiness with overachieving, competition, and being the best. These concepts are no longer in balance in our culture; they have become the norm rather than the extreme. We are quickly losing sight of what kids really need to live full and meaningful lives.

Learning to just listen to our kids

Posted Apr 12, 2011 3:51 PM

We parents tend to feel guilty about what we are not doing or not giving our children. We expend energy feeling bad about things we can’t afford or the trips we can’t take or the class we couldn’t get them into. But I think children’s needs are simpler.

My mission as a parent educator is to help parents see their children. To help parents validate and acknowledge who their children came here to be. To teach children that they belong and that they have a place in this world. But does it stop there?

My 6-year-old daughter has a headache. I go through a list in my head….maybe she had too much sugar today, maybe she needs some Tylenol, maybe she’s getting sick. Being aware that my first response is usually worry, I decide to breath through my concerns and simply say, what can I do to help you?

As the resident leprechaun in our group of friends, Cathy has asked me to contribute to her blog regarding St. Patrick’s Day events. Chicago comes alive to celebrate one of it’s favorite holidays, with a variety of events and entertainment all centered around the wearin’ o’ the green....

Born This Way

After one listen I couldn't wait to dance to it in the kitchen with my girls, and I couldn't help but think of all the people who would be dancing, singing, and believing in what this song has to say. It kind of choked me up.

Sorry, one more Tiger Mom comment....

There is an assumption that if we allow our kids to discover their own interests, boundaries around things like TV, Facebook, internet would just go out the window. Or that allowing children to be who they are means completely disconnecting or leaving them to their own devices.

Everyone Deserves a Chance to Fly

I have had the luxury of seeing Wicked on several occasions and I have yet to make it through the Defying Gravity scene without crying. The song is dramatic, full of emotion, and it’s also the first time that Elphaba, the main character, fully accepts herself. It’s when she declares to the world who she really is.
