The Choice to Shine

Posted Mar 9, 2010 1:24 PM

In a moment an actor goes from one of the many to an Academy Award Winner. They moved out of their comfort zone or took a role that nobody thought they could tackle. They listened to their gut or took a leap of faith. Year after year this has inspired me and served as a reminder.

What does a doula do?

Posted Mar 4, 2010 3:29 PM

Most people have never heard of the term “doula”, or if they have, they don’t know that the presence of a doula at a woman’s birth can shorten the amount of time she is in labor, decrease her chances of having interventions like pain medications or a C-Section, and increase her overall satisfaction with her labor and baby’s birth. Having a doula is a choice that most pregnant women don’t even know exists.

Can't sleep? Just breathe

Posted Feb 25, 2010 10:57 AM

I woke up at 2:30 last night. Most of the time I fall back asleep pretty quickly – exhaustion can do that to you. But last night my brain decided it was a good time to worry. My thoughts were all over the place. From the little things (is the front door locked?) to the big things (is our country really safe?).

There are so many emotional experiences in the course of a day. Sometimes we work through them and sometimes we just swallow them. Sometimes we need to release them, and in Camryn’s case the ripped sticker was an opportunity to let it all go.

Valentine's Day

Posted Feb 12, 2010 1:55 PM

Use this occasion to give rather than get and make it about feelings rather than stuff. We blame Hallmark and the media for making this holiday “too overwhelming”, but we have to take responsibility for our role, too. Why do we buy into it? Why do we lose the meaning?

Elisabeth Shake, professional organizer and owner of Yourganized, is an expert in de-cluttering homes and opening up space for new possibilities. She knows that disorganization can cause us to feel out of balance, but our emotional attachment to “stuff” keeps us from letting go of what we don’t need. Elisabeth was kind enough to answer some of my burning questions…..

The Coins

Posted Feb 4, 2010 4:21 PM

Several times we explained that the coins were a gift from Grampa Rich and were very special, but at some point they became toys and ended up in a backpack. With a calm but obviously annoyed voice I say, Don't you understand how special these are? Don’t you understand that these are not toys?
