Boy dies in tragic accident. Heartbroken father, who also happens to be an advanced robotics scientist, builds robot in image of boy. Boy-robot discovers the truth and runs away. Boy-robot returns, saves planet from villain.

That's the general idea behind Summit Entertainment's new picture, Astroboy, which opened this weekend to a surprisingly wimpy $7 million. It's a beautifully animated remake of the 1960s comic cartoon, and, for the most part, is exactly what you'd expect: a likely (and an unlikely) villian, the classic "I was born ready" line, and machine guns materializing out of our hero's butt.

But don't take it from us. We headed over to Classic Cinemas at the North Riverside Park mall on the film's opening weekend to get firsthand reviews. And we got nothing but thumbs up.
