Try goby, then enter to win an iPad2

Traveling? There's an app for that. Actually, there are thousands of apps for that, just like there are thousands of apps for anything else you want to do. But there aren't that many apps that are free and still really good.

I get at least a handful of press releases every week from companies promoting their new app for travel. Some will help parents find the nearest playground, others offer GPS-like services while still others aim to keep all those pesky travel documents organized.

The newest one I've been playing with is goby. It's a website ( as well as a free iPhone/iPod/iPad app. Since I don't have a coveted i-anything, I used the service online. (There is an older version of goby available for Android phones, but the newest features aren't on it yet.)

Good for parents of picky eaters

I am particularly fond of goby's restaurant search function. As the parent of a son who was a very picky eater, I always found vacations to be stressful. We would carefully choose a restaurant, read every entry on the menu and pick something we thought he would like…only to have him reject the choice.

If we had had goby, we could have plugged in our need for food and the location we needed it, then arranged the search results by cuisine or proximity. (There's a rating search function as well, but it didn't matter to my son if the joint was a five-star spot or not. We needed food he would eat and we didn't want to be driving across town with two hungry, cranky kids.)

There are plenty of apps and I'm curious which ones you have used to find things your kids would like to do or places they might like to eat when you travel?

Win an iPad2

If you try goby and, like me, can't use it on the go because you don't have an i-anything, you have a chance to win one if you join me on Twitter Monday night from 8-9 pm Chicago time. Goby is the sponsor of our #TMOM family-travel-themed Twitter chat this week. The app is free, so the company is giving away an iPad2 to. One lucky party participant. Details are on my site. You have to leave your name in the comment section of this story and send at least one tweet during the #TMOMGoby Twitter chat on Monday May 23 to be eligible to win. Then follow me on Twitter @CindyRichards
