About this blog
One of the biggest and most difficult decisions to make when pregnant is not whether or not to get an epidural during delivery.
No, it's what kind of furniture to buy for your unborn.
Between sifting through crib recalls, color choices, and manufacturers, the whole process can be daunting. Showrooms are cluttered and the order process maddening.
Enter Muu. A furniture company that makes baby furniture that is stylish, well-crafted, and oh yeah, not toxic, made in America and concerned with our planet's limited natural resources. Better yet, Muu furniture comes with a spot to personalize its furniture with a uniquely designed panel that fits your baby's personality and style.
I had the chance to meet Muu founder Robert Kwak last week at Grow Modern, a hipster children's boutique in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago. Grow is the only retailer in the city that carries Muu.
Kwak launched Muu in 2008 after he pondered the market of available baby furniture for his first-born daughter. A recreational furniture builder himself, he wanted to create a product that would grow with the child and one that was also made in the USA and of sustainable resources.
Muu baby furniture has a mid-century modern feel and clean lines. The Sam Storage Unit (shown below) is clever in that it has no doors and is easily accessible by a toddler. You get the feeling that Kwak really did his research and used his own experiences in raising a toddler to make his furniture.

The design panels are quite innovative. There are over 50 different panel designs to chose from, so if your baby likes bugs now, but grows into rock and roll as a toddler, he doesn't have to live with the bugs forever. And you don't need to rush out to by new "big boy" furniture.
Which brings me to the price. Buying Muu is quite an investment. (Cribs range from $795-$1175, dressers $895-$1125.) But the argument can be made to invest in the staple pieces of your child's room. And it would give me comfort to have known exactly where and how my baby's furniture was made and delivered and that it doesn't contain toxic chemicals. What more can we do for our babies than give them cozy and chemical-free places to rest?
Muu is found in the city at Grow Modern (1943 W. Division St.) and in the suburbs at Buy Buy Baby in Downers Grove.
Another date with early intervention?
