About 24,000 mood rings and necklaces are being recalled by a federal agency, which warns that high levels of lead in the jewelry can be toxic if ingested. Lead poisoning is especially dangerous in young children, whose developing brains are more vulnerable.

"Love Tester" mood rings and necklaces, sold in small retail stores nationwide from September 2005 through June 2010 for about $4, are being recalled.

Lead levels aside, we're wondering how these were ever passed off as kid-appropriate at all. "Are you in the mood?" reads the packaging. If the ring turns beige, the wearer is apparently feeling "naughty." Graduate to pink and it's "hot stuff."
