Fired up about TSA pat-downs?

Posted Apr 20, 2011 6:10 PM

A year-and-a-half after 9/11, my daughter, then just 2 years old, was asked to take off her Winnie the Pooh sneakers and stand, spread-eagle, for a female Transportation Security Administration screener. She was scanned with a wand and quickly patted down.

A Mom's New Year's Resolutions

Posted Jan 20, 2011 2:12 PM

I’m not a big fan of making New Year’s resolutions. I suspect this is because I know I’m a slacker – and won’t keep them.

Fresh apple pie, sweet cookies baked by my sweeties, and frolicking in fallen leaves. Can it get any better?

Posted Oct 24, 2010 8:45 AM

“We can’t have too many cookies, right?” Noah called from the kitchen. “Umm, I can’t imagine a scenario where that would be a problem,” I replied, grinning as I typed. Guess I'll need to take three Zumba classes every week now, definitely three. And maybe do a few situps. But if Holly has her way, all I really need to do is rake.

Scare up some fun with your family at Six Flags Fright Fest!

Posted Oct 9, 2010 5:22 PM

Looking for a thrilling way to enjoy the Halloween season with your family? Last Sunday, mine headed up to Gurnee for “Fright Fest” at Six Flags Great America and had a fabulous time. Racing in a canoe with your kid isn't for sissies, either!

Posted Jun 21, 2010 10:50 AM

Water, check. Sunscreen, check. Sunglasses, check. But “Oooh, I forgot to Google ‘canoeing,’” I winced, as my husband backed the car out of the driveway. I’d hoped to soak up some last-minute tips on how to avoid tipping … Noah and I had canoed before, but never in a race – and certainly not for six miles. But we were pumped, ready or not.

Getting Ready to Tread the Fox in our Tippy Canoe

Posted Jun 11, 2010 11:11 PM

My son and I participated in the 49th Mid-American Canoe & Kayak Race on the Fox River last Sunday. “Hey Noah, I heard about this canoe race…” I ventured, a few days before. “You and me, Mom!” he shouted, high-fiving me. Yes! And I didn’t even have to talk him into it. You see, I have an unrequited love of paddling.

Recalling garage sale memories and making new ones with my kids

Posted May 29, 2010 6:09 PM

“I love this! You’re gonna sell it?” my daughter Holly exclaimed. I cringed as she admired the yellow bud vase I’d hoped to unload in our garage sale last month. Deciding it will look great in her bedroom after the room is painted baby blue, she promptly peeled off the price-tag. The vase wasn’t the only thing reclaimed.

What a 'Croc': My daughter's first run-in with the fashion police

Posted May 19, 2010 1:03 PM

Crocs and Croc-wannabe's are springing up everywhere again, which reminds me of an encounter I observed between Holly and the fashion police.

Tales from an 'un' soccer mom

Posted May 13, 2010 12:45 PM

My kids both play soccer, so our Saturdays are spent driving from pillar to post and cheering from the sidelines. It's a blast -- unless it’s your turn to bring the half-time snack and you drop the ball.

My Spectacular Mom, in a Nutshell

My mom would hate for me to sing her praises with flowery tributes or cliched sentiments, so I won't.
