I'd tell them the truth, apologize and come up with a Plan B. When the dog ate the turkey and fixings in "A Christmas Story," didn't they order Chinese food? If I had something in my freezer or found a store open, I could whip up something delicious fairly quickly. My guests could talk and watch football or a movie until it was done.
