Stories about motherhood can lead to a more fulfilled life

Last week, I attended the Erma Bombeck Writers Workshop at the University of Dayton. I met some amazing and talented writers and learned specifically about humor writing. When you go to a conference about writing, the people you meet want to know where you write, where you have been published, and in the case of a humor writers workshop, they often ask if you have ever performed anything you have ever written.

Luckily, last year, I had that chance. I was able to talk about my experience with Listen to Your Mother Chicago.

Listen to Your Mother is a show which, this year, will be in 32 cities. It gives people the chance to share stories of motherhood. It is unique for several reasons, but mostly because the stories that are shared are written and performed by the cast members who are not professionals. These people are ordinary people like you and me who want to share stories of their mothers, what it is like to be a mother, or offer what they know about the experience of motherhood.

I am a big believer in this quote:

“There are three things we should do every day.

1. Laugh every day. 2. Spend some time in thought. 3. Have your emotions moved to tears.

If you laugh, you think and cry every day, that’s a full day!  You do that seven days a week, you’re going to have something special.”

– Jim Valvano  (Jimmy V, American Basketball Coach who delivered the above in his 1993 ESPY Awards Acceptance speech, just eight weeks before he died of cancer.)

Just hearing the stories of the cast the Listen to Your Mother show will give you a whole new perspective, not just motherhood, but on life. You’ll laugh, you’ll think and you’ll cry. It will be a full day, but it may lead you to a much fuller life.

This year’s Listen to Your Mother Chicago Show will be Sunday, May 4 at 2 p.m. in the afternoon at the Athenaeum Theatre in Chicago.
