If you live anywhere within 100 miles of Chicago,
I'm sure you're just as fed up with the weather we've been having.
Spring is somewhere in our near future, but after months of being
cooped up inside with the kids, I'm sure many of us just want to
In fact, I've been daydreaming about just that lately. I
mentioned it to my husband and he's all in! I'm so excited to get
some time away from all the pleas of "Moooooom," but still be close
enough to rush right back if need be.
We've been tossing a few locations around and I think
we've narrowed it down to the final three.
Help us decide. Where would you go?
County, WI - If you're looking to relax, take in the
sights, go on a hike or just eat at a good ol' fashioned fish fry,
then Door County, WI might be the place for you. Located about 250
miles north of Chicago, Door County is home to five of Wisconsin's
state parks, 11 gorgeous lighthouses that were mostly built in the
19th century and more than 2,000 acres of
cherry orchards. Perfect for folks that seek a little fun and
adventure, the Door County Adventure
Center offers Canopy Zip Line and Death's Door Kayak
Tours, as well as Mink River SUP (Stand-Up Paddleboarding) Tours
and rentals. Lodging in Door County ranges from luxury resorts,
historic inns and hotels, to cabins, bed and breakfasts, vacation
rentals and campground space. Springtime is the perfect time to
visit Door County as the
Season of Blossoms arrives and visitors come to the area
from all over the Midwest.
Galena, IL - Although I have
visited Galena numerous times (my sister even got married there!),
there's just something about the small-town charm of Galena that
keeps me coming back. Wine lovers, especially, are attracted to the
Galena area as there are a number of local wineries offering
tastings - my favorites are the fruit wines at the Galena Cellars &
Vineyard. Other things to do in the area include golfing,
shopping along Galena's Main Street and visiting the local
landmarks like the home of Ulysses S Grant. The bed
& breakfast lodging options here are well-known and plentiful.
Located only 165 miles from Chicago, this charming city on the
Galena River is the perfect one-tank trip from the Chicago
Saugatuck, MI -
Located only 140 miles from Chicago, the harbor village of
Saugatuck, MI is the perfect, quaint little getaway for those
looking for a little quiet time, or for spending some time
outdoors. Attractions in the area include beaches, sand dunes, boat
tours, horseback riding and winery tours. Visitors will have no
trouble finding a spot to relax and the Soda Fountain at
The Village Store will take you back in time with it's
retro feel. Fun fact - it's the only soda fountain located inside
of a drugstore in the entire Midwest!
No matter which destination you choose, couples will enjoy
the time to reconnect (and possibly even rekindle the romance) on a
quick, gas tank getaway from the Chicago area. Sure, you'll miss
the kids, but the endless calls of "Moooooom," will still be there
when you return.
