Summer Fireworks

The spectacle is choreographed to music and produced by award-winning Melrose Pyrotechnics. Watch from a lakefront boat cruise, Navy Pier’s South Dock or one of the Ferris wheel gondolas.

Theatre-Hikes

The Morton Arboretum | Lisle, Ill.

In August, follow a day in the life of Charlie Brown and the rest of the Peanuts gang in “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” Low-impact hikes suitable for strollers, walkers and wheelchairs take place on Aug. 3. Each performance lasts approximately three hours. Wear comfortable shoes, weather-appropriate clothing and bring a chair or blanket, water bottle and insect repellent.

When: 1-3:30 p.m. weekends
Cost: $20, $10 kids; $10 members, $5 member kids

Theatre Hikes

The Morton Arboretum | Lisle, Ill.

Follow the captivating story of “Alice in Wonderland” and watch as performers search for the white rabbit and enjoy a spot of tea with the Mad Hatter throughout July. In August, hikers can follow a day in the life of Charlie Brown and the rest of the Peanuts gang in “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.”  Taking place throughout September, “Enchanted April” is based on Elizabeth von Arnim’s novel, and tells the story of four dissimilar women in 1920s England who leave their damp and rainy environments to go on a holiday to a secluded coastal castle in Italy. In October, hikers can follow along to “Resurrected: Grave Tales of Chicagoland.” Profiling five famous Chicago scary tales— Resurrection Mary, Devil Baby of Hull House, Julia Petta, the Italian Bride and Francis Levy's Handprint— these eerie stories are strung together by the Wynkoop Murder investigation and include audience participation. Low-impact hikes suitable for strollers, walkers and wheelchairs will take place on July 6, Aug. 3, Sept. 7 and Oct. 5. Each performance lasts approximately three hours. Participants should wear comfortable shoes, weather-appropriate clothing and bring a chair or blanket, water bottle and insect repellent.

Cirque Shanghai

Navy Pier | Chicago, Ill.

Cirque Shanghai returns this summer to Chicago’s Navy Pier with a brand new show, “Cirque Shanghai: Warriors.” Performances begin Wednesday, May 21 and run through Monday, Sept. 1 at the Pepsi Skyline Stage, a 1,500-seat, canopied, open-air theater on Navy Pier. Tickets go on sale May 2, 2014.

Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place | Chicago, Ill.

Emerald City presents this classic story. When Wilbur is saved and sent to live on farm, he finds a new unexpected family. Follow our piggy hero as he grows from being the runt of the litter to "Some Pig" with the help of a remarkable spider, Charlotte. Performances run July 11-Aug. 17.
