Weekend Family Class: Sweet Treats: Cold Eats

Chicago Botanic Garden | Glencoe, Ill.

Participants will put together (and taste!) some easy-to-make fruity treats like smoothies and flavored shaved ice and take home recipes to make at home.

When: 9:30-11 a.m. or 1-2:30 p.m. Feb. 12 and 25

Rock Climbing

Heller Nature Center | Highland Park, Ill.

Spend the day practicing your climbing skills, challenging yourself on technical routes, traversing the bouldering wall and having a blast climbing at Vertical Endeavors. Please bring a peanut-free lunch.

Little Explorers: Have a heart for our bird friends

Lake Katherine Nature Center and Botanic Gardens | Palos Heights, Ill.

Kids eat like a bird, tasting pasta (worms), raisins (insects) and sunflower seed. Children will also examine bird feathers and nests. Plus, take a walk outside to look for birds and try a bird feeder project.

When: 9:30 a.m. Thursday-Friday; 10:30 a.m. Saturday

Nature at Night Pajama Party

Prairieview Education Center | Crystal Lake, Ill.

Get into some comfy pajamas and enjoy an evening of games, stories and activities all about local nocturnal animals. Discover who is out and about on cold, snowy winter nights under the moonlit skies, while you are usually tucked under the warm blankets of your bed. Even make your own track field guide to take home with you so you can explore outdoors for evidence of nocturnal animals on future hikes. Dessert and hot chocolate will be provided.

When: 7-9 p.m.

Birch Leggings and The Birkie

Sagawau Environmental Learning Center | Lemont, Ill.

How did an infant prince from the 12th century inspire the world’s most famous Nordic ski race? Learn the history of the Birkebeiner Ski Race and how it became “the greatest show on the snow.” Ski with wood skis and wool knickers or dress like a Viking and win a prize.

Two weekends of free giveaways, costume character meet-and-greets and themed scavenger hunts and builds. Activities include a Batmobile build-and-test station and gadget building in the Master Builder Academy’s bat cave.

Monster Jam

Allstate Arena | Rosemont, Ill.

The Monster Jam Triple Threat Series can only be seen in select cities and features the most extreme athletes of Monster Jam. Chicago-area fans will witness a fierce battle for the championship with each competitor using customized high-powered vehicles: Monster Jam Speedsters, Monster Jam ATVs and the famous Monster Jam trucks. Pit Parties (10:30 a.m.-noon Saturday and Sunday) give fans the opportunity to meet the Monster Jam athletes and get up close to the Monster Jam trucks.

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday; 1 and 7 p.m. Saturday; 1 and 6:30 p.m. Sunday; 1 p.m. Monday.
